Uchrony of the Ukrainian War: Antoine Rault
Antoine Rault's choral novel "L'Angle Mort du Destin" (2025), with its uchronic structure, presents two alternative scenarios for the fates of its characters, who live in Kyiv or Moscow and are preoccupied with their careers and personal ambitions. Scenario A ("Ce qui n'arriva pas") illuminates a world of peace in which the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, fails to materialize, forcing the protagonists to grapple with the moral compromises, opportunism, and corruption of post-Soviet daily life. In stark contrast, Scenario B ("Ce qui arriva") depicts the actual invasion and shows how this historical rupture radically alters the characters' lives, forcing them to flee, resist, and make existential choices. The juxtaposition of these two scenarios creates a veritable vertigo by measuring the extent to which decisions beyond our control determine the very existence of individuals. By juxtaposing fiction and reality, the book sheds a harsh but revealing light on our human condition and examines freedom and determinism in the face of history.
