Cortés and the Future of Mestizaje: Christian Duverger

Christian Duverger, an expert in Mesoamerican anthropology, presents his "Mémoires de Cortés" (2025) as a fictional autobiography based on historical sources, written in the form of a long letter from Hernán Cortés to his eldest son, Martín, in 1543. Reflecting on his life at the end, Cortés seeks to explain his origins to his son. The text is an introspective analysis of Cortés's life and decisions. Ultimately, the "Mémoires" illuminate Cortés's inner turmoil and his literary self-reinvention. He attempted to reconcile his dual life—political calculation (his marriage to Juana de Zúñiga) versus his love for Marina and the Mestizaje project.
